I still check it a few times a day - granted there aren’t as many articles I am interested in anymore, but there are still sometimes good ones.

I’m on oppo a lot but the fp a couple times a day maybe, but that’s how it has always been for me.

Is it just me or have the number of new articles dropped substantially? Seems like its the same stuff for days on end.

It’s a mix of that and that content is just gone. The amount of reshares of things barely related to auto outweighs fresh articles 4-1. Sad times, that will only get worse because it is obvious they have no desire to change course.

Or maybe their hands are just tied due to litigation and writers looking for more solvent opportunities. Bums me out.

Sure, that’s an obvious drop. But it’s Alexa, which only tracks users who have the Alexa toolbar installed. Additionally, 1500 to 1650 isn’t THAT huge of a drop, it’s just that it’s hard to graph “ranking” since there’s no “bottom” to the y-axis.

Having said that, I hardly ever go to Jalopnik anymore. I’ve discussed it with friends, and they’ve all essentially said the same. It’s been a definite drop over the last year or two.

Of the 20 articles currently on the Jalopnik main page, 11 of them are shared from other places. Of the 11 shared, I count 4 (FOUR) that are car-related. That means that out of the 20 articles on the main page, only 13 are car-related. So maybe that will shed some light on why Jalopnik may be losing it. I’m still gray in the Jalopnik comments and I don’t really even care because I feel the urge to comment so little there.

I don’t think it’s political opinions, garker has always been garker. But it does seem like original content is dwindling, and any other car blog can post links to articles on other sites. I’m guessing it has to do with the business going into legal limbo, because who knows what new owners would do with it.

I hardly bother with the FP at all now, and just stick to oppo, and when you actually have a look at the state of it, it’s easy to see why it’s dropped. Here’s a list of all the articles that you’d have a hard time justifying as car related (I’m not including reposts of YouTube video or the photograph-and-a-sentence filler content, because at least that stuffs automotive related)

-A music video

-An obviously anti-car Gizmodo article

-Something to do with the history of the olympics

-A piece about stuff in the new Star Wars movie

-A Torshinsky post about dot matrix signs on blimps

-A deals post for phone chargers and chewing gum

-An article about Trump and nuclear weapons

Why is any of this on Jalopnik?

I don’t even thinkthe Jalopnik writers even have a choice in the matter. Someone higher than them says “crosspost this to Jalopnik” and they have to listen.

Sometimes it makes no sense what they post, but I say good riddance. It’s not “showing a bias” to point out how ridiculous Trump is, when he is objectively doing these ridiculous things. The people getting butthurt over that don’t seem to understand why they’re mad.

Very true. I thought about that before posting this and considered maybe some sites have been performing especially well and have taken Jalopnik’s spot.

That said, I think it’s unlikely that 150 sites would outperform Jalopnik that much if they were ranked lower before, and that given the core userbase Jalopnik had, it would be very difficult to upset their otherwise stable rankings unless the people themselves were leaving.

It’s not showing a bias to do news articles about things trump has said or done. It is showing a bias (and, more importantly, poor journalism because I expect bias on a GM site) to have articles entirely based upon tweets that someone with absolutely no knowledge of trump has sent out. It isn’t hard to make negative articles about trump if they want, why they have to make such crappy ones is beyond me.

TL;DR? They’ve fired or lost all their good journalists.

Well frankly if they aren’t being supported by Clinton they’re even dumber than I thought to lose all these page views with no return.

And I get that it can be difficult to get cars to test, but with the wealth of information on the internet they could post so much more without needing to spend a dime. Give me a rundown on some fun car history. Show me cool shit on ebay. Talk about how xyz components work in the car. Almost anything is better than what we have now.

The tone has greatly shifted. I still check out morning shift and graverobber, but sorting through stuff in the mid-day to find ‘jalopnik’ posts is too tedious. I don’t even mind most of the tangential topics like a lot of folks seem to, but it used to be that if there was an article about something not directly car related (let’s say urbanism) it was done through the lens of authors who generally reflected the background and interests of the reader. If it wasn’t through that lens they had the ability (which I understand doesn’t exist now) to write up a blurb and include the X-post in a wrapper. I don’t go to an automobile site for an urbanist view of urbanism just like I wouldn’t go to an urbanist site for an enthusiast’s review of the new Ford GT...it makes no sense.

That said, I'm still a pretty regular reader and I still head there first for most of my automotive reading, I just do it less than I did 3-4 years ago.

Hmm it seems to have went off the cliff right about the time I was banned for mocking the Tesla shilling. Maybe it’s all because of me? :)

But really, haven’t been back in many weeks, don’t miss it. The place had become a joke anyway. It started with the “buyers guides”, which read like special advertising sections and were almost shamefully easy to mock - IMO they were trying to have manufacturers put them on the payroll. Then the Tesla shilling started, no doubt with a similar strategy. Beware of those history lessons, data can be inaccurate, and the bloggers don’t like being called out on it. I originally went there for the Murilee Martin content, and the irreverent smart commentary (as many posters know worlds more about cars than any of the bloggers), the former of which went elsewhere years ago, and the latter of which has faded away. Little original content now. Circling the drain.

Regarding political babble, I suppose if one supports the opposition, they could be upset - that’s a train wreck and a dumpster fire rolled into one, can’t be a good feeling.

This needs way more context. So, right when people typically take summer vacations, hits on a leisure site dropped? Is that drop there every year this time? It’s why network TV runs their shows starting in September, too. Do other similar sites, like The Drive, see similar drops as well?

Ive been in the grey there ever since I was forced to create this new profile and truth be told, I’m not even bothered by it. Its just not....as appealing anymore. Foxtroth changed from interesting articles about military equipment to a subsite about politics, wtf?

I didnt care much for DeMuros articles and dont care much for him being gone, but Jalopnik itself is just....lame....

the whole Lanesplitter situation really left a bad taste in my mouth. First because of the shitty way they fired Sean, second for perma-dismissing anyone who mentioned it /asked about it in comments. Then Ballaban went on twitter and weasel-y sneered “If you have to ask why you’re in the grays, you probably belong there.”

Kinja'd!!! Justin Hughes > Breakfast Burrito: The True Resident Burrito

I think people aren’t visiting as much because they’re not putting out as much good automotive content. Half their writers have left or been let go, and there’s only so much content any single person can generate, whether it’s an in-depth research piece like Ballaban has done on occasion or a simple “this video is cool” post. Stef’s doing a great job with Black Flag, and Andrew’s doing well with the Truck Yeah thing, as usual. But Foxtrot Alpha has no one at the helm, Buyers Guide hasn’t been updated since March, The Garage has a ton of untapped potential, and we all know what happened to Lanesplitter. And when’s the last time something from Oppo has been reposted to the FP? I can’t remember.

If people want to waste time at work read quality automotive stories, they’re going to find them somewhere. If they’re not on Jalopnik , people will look elsewhere.

You are NOT alone! I agree 100%, and I think it started around Kinja time. Cross-posting is not the end of the world, but should be used VERY sparingly. It’s used much too much to bolster a very noticeable decline in content. Also, the amount of ads and sponsored content has increased significantly... the last straw for me was the splash page ad with the countdown before you can see the page. The first post for me now on the FP is a gawker kickback deal for a usb charger...

It’s not surprising that people are leaving, both readers and contributors.

Edmunds Inside Line came and went...and now we’re seeing the decline of Jalopnik. Autoblog is sorta cool, but they usually post things a day or 2 later. I guess R&T is the next go-to site?

You’re looking at this in a vacuum, that is, “all other sites have stayed the same and only Jalopnik has changed.” Car buying is seasonal. No one gives a shit in the summer because the current MY is basically done and everyone wants to go to the beach. Plus timing of trade shows and announcements, etc.
